BeAwesome: #177 Poke

All great programmers learn the same way. They poke the box. They code something and see what the computer does. They change it and see what the computer does. They repeat the process again and again until they figure out how the box works.” – Seth Godin

I finished reading a book recently called “Poke the Box” by Seth Godin. It was well written. Very thoughtful and rich with information. When first reading the title I thought, “what in the world is this book be about”, “what is Seth talking about now”. Already knowing about Seth, I knew it would be inspiring and somewhat business/marketing orientated. What I got from this book was a lot more. Seth talked about Poking (Not Facebook poking). Poking an idea. Poking parts of life. Again, I quickly caught on to what Seth was talking about, but continued to read. Seth talks about, “working on the work instead of the fear of doing the work” (read that again). Seth talks about, “if you don’t finish, it doesn’t really count as starting, and if you don’t start, you’re not poking”.Seth talks about, ” Excellence and how it isn’t about working extra hard to do what you’re told. It’s about taking the initiative to do work you decide is worth doing”. Not waiting for a map, put drawing your own map. Poke something you love and see what happens. Poke a though or friend to see a reaction. Poking is about testing the water or warming up an idea. Those who are AWESOME poke. Not just on Facebook but in real life we poke. We poke because we believe it will give us an understanding for what to do, or what might happen next in a situation or experience we are involved in. We poke. Poke
