Hate it or Love it the Underdogs on Top

[Chorus (50 then Game):]
Hate it or love it the underdog’s on top
And I’m gonna shine homie until my heart stop

Go head’ envy me
I’m raps MVP
And I ain’t goin nowhere so you can get to know me

The NBA Finals are over. The confetti that fell from American Airlines Area is cleaned up. The lights to the gym are turned off, and the seats are empty. The locker rooms no longer smell of champagne and sweaty men. The fan section no longer has popcorn and spilled soda sticking to the floor. It is all over. The Miami Heat repeat as champions, and the off-season begins.

If you are a sports fanatic or NBA junky you knew coming into the NBA season what the headline stories would be. Will King James be dethroned from Championship number 2? Will his supporting cast be up for the Challenge? Is LBJ the best player in the NBA? Anyone could tell you that Lebron James would be the focus throughout the regular season. This young man has been in the spot light his entire career, dating back to his high school, The Fighting Irish. Since living in Akron Ohio, LBJ has had to deal with flashing cameras, over aggressive media and rude analysis since a teen, comparisons to MJ and Kobe Byrant, his place in history, his mark on the NBA brand. At the age of 28, LBJ has been given a lot of responsibility (A lot of which he has not asked for/Some of which he did). All of this, not allowing, Lebron to be Lebron.

The Expectations

On June 26th, 2003 the NBA was given an instant attraction. Though the draft was filled with 3 other superstars (Do you remember who they are), they did not receive the hype, in which the kid from Akron received. This kid was already given the crown, and an audience was waiting to see if the crown fit perfectly. At the age of 17 he was given the nick name “The Chosen One, by Greg Kelly an SI senior editor (NBA Players usually do not come up with nicknames for themselves/If they did it was whack or not really a nickname), talked to NBA superstars on a regular basis (Tracy MacGrady, Antoine Walker, and coach John Locus of Cleveland at the time) and also spent time with rap legend Jay Z. Not to mention the $100 million dollar endorsements deals before a game on the hardwood.

His path and hype was like no other superstar who has ever entered the NBA nor any other professional sport. The expectations from no other individual have been this high. The pressure from teammates, organizations, fans and media was at its all-time high, not to mention he was still 17-18 at the time. Entering something new is easy when you have nothing to lose. The world (for some reason) gives you 1-2 years to mess up and make mistakes. Everything after that is considered a fail or you will be highly criticized for your actions. It only took 1 year for the world to focus in on LBJ and his progress as a superstar, and what he has YET to accomplish. Or better yet what he has to accomplish to be considered great. How did he respond?

All of this and the world still doubts what he can do:

Everyone makes mistakes. We go through life and learn from the decisions we make as an adult and as a kid. If we did not make mistakes and go through ups and downs we would not learn as much as we learn and grow as much as we grow. Everyone has their reasons for why they dislike Lebron James. Moving from Cleveland to Miami. The Decision. The way he plays the game. The way he speaks. What he does in the community. Possibly even the things he eats. How he works out. Some simply have no reason at all. Some just like to follow a trend that is floating in the media (The Bad Guy). Some just hate hearing comparisons to him and other players.

Lebron is amongst very few players (in the world of sports) who have been hated for being so damn good. Hated for making life choices, he felt (key word “HE”) would be best for him. Everyone believes to know what is right for Lebron James. In the mean time, he continues to do what he feels is right for himself. There comes a time in life where you have to make choices for you, you can either allow others to dictate future goals and dreams, or you can decide to determine these experiences and expectations on your own.

Lebron James went through a variety of hatred. Scooter Magruder has it all in his 2012 skit Stuff Lebron James Haters Say

Scooter makes a point of emphasizes to show that no matter what LBJ does throughout his career, people will always find a way to hate him, or dislike his accomplishment. And this does not “only” go for Lebron, James, this is a fact for everyone. Know matter how good or great you are at something, people will always try to find a way to bring you down, or make you feel less of a person. It is up to you to manage this storm, and come up with ways to weather the storm.

Spending 7 years in Cleveland without a ring left Lebron upset and hungry for better results. A Decision in 2010 rocked the sports world and easily gave fans and media something to hold onto for a lifetime. Another loss in the 2011 NBA Finals to Dallas made one think and take a better look in the mirror.

The lessons learned through experience have forced Lebron into one or 2 mindsets. He could either allow others to determine his future or take control. Lebrons latest decision was overlooked this year. Lebron decided to block out all of those who negatively affected his game. He used these (Haters) individuals as motivation to create one he best all time performances over an NBA season/playoffs. And he said it best when he received his MVP award in-game 7.

Last Thoughts:

All of your failures should be used as motivation. The pressure and outside influences are more reasons why you should want to be successful. This should be the gas for your engine. Never take a negative comment too serious. Never allow a word or gesture to go to the heart. Use it. And create something out of it.

BeAwesome: #300 Fresh

Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it- Lucy Maud Montgomery

I love the smell of new shoes. It is in my top 5 favorite smells of all time. Actually, it is in my top 3. Weird right. I know I get it all the time. Don’t you love the smell of something new. Opening the wrapper or the box. The feel and touch of something fresh. Not used, touched or worn. I try to get and receive a lesson from everything I do. That is one way I keep positive throughout life. I take the old. And the new. And use both of them to influence my future. I try to stay fresh all the time. Not cool. Not buying new clothes. Not buying expensive jewelry. It means keeping what you do up to date. Being aware. And continuing the push yourself towards having the future you dream about. That fresh smell does not have to go away. It has to be something you continue to smell over and over again. Put the work in every day. And start fresh tomorrow. Run into walls (not literally) Make mistakes. And later start fresh. You always have to go back. And smell it again. Before you can move forward.

Fresh. Not previously known or used; new. Or different. Recently. The first thing that comes to mind when we see this word is cool. And of course we all have our on type cool (Or so-called swagger) but that has to do with your appearance and style. This has to do with your way of life and thinking. Allow yourself a fresh start. Every time you start something. Or go back to something that you’ve been previously working on. That is a fresh start. Never rely on your past to make things happen. Understanding the importance of making experiences. Work. And drive. Fresh each time you beginning. And start. This will give you a lot to look forward to. When you start in your past. Or where you left off. That is giving your mind a memory. Asking you to think about what happen before. Open a fresh thought. And then get going. Starting off fresh is an important part of being successful.

Those who are awesome are fresh. That is all:-)

BeAwesome: Tired of Losing

BeAwesome: Tired of Losing

Tired of Losing

In sports. You have a winner and a loser. You can’t win them all. And hopefully you do not lose them all as well. I believe that the stories on individuals working hard at their crafts and developing their skills, are what fans miss out on. Someone new to the league see’s an individual that is skilled and assumes they are gifted. Or assumes this so called“talent” comes from thin air. Or is so enormously God like. (Don’t get me wrong, I believe in God) but these individuals were not born this way. Hard work is what helped them succeed. They decided to work harder than everyone else.

I was never a big KG fan (Kevin Garnett ) but I do love basketball and I respect hard work and dedication. I talk about what I know. From personal experiences and from what I read. For those of you who do not follow basketball. I will give you a little breakdown. Minnesota is no hot head for sports. It is not a big name professionals want to go. Better yet, the average person in general (Normally doesn’t) pick Minnesota as their first and favorite destination on a holiday either. Nothing against Minnesota (Sorry).

A high school kid from South Carolina tried to (I think he did to a certain extent) change the atmosphere in a city. What do you have to lose? Fresh out of high school. And a million dollar franchise is giving you the team. And asking you to do what ever it takes to make them a title contender. Now although, he was well crafted and an obvious superstar from the beginning, the rest of the league slowly moved past them each year. Minnesota made playoffs seven straight seasons (97-03). Which is an accomplishment itself. But in life, when things keep re-appearing we start to want more. How do we get more?

We work harder. In 2004 KG had said, “I am tired of losing”. Everyone started to see the teenage boy now grown into a man. He was awarded the leagues best player. His team also made it pass the first round of the playoffs for the first time. Unfortunately, his goal of winning a championship was still cut short in the NBA finals. As his franchise struggled repeatedly in giving Mr. Granett some well-deserved help, 12 years later he had nothing else to give this organization. Can you really blame him? After 12 years.

Before the 2007 NBA campaign started, KG decided to part ways with Minnesota. He was traded to the Boston Celtics. One year later. Kevin Garnett is an NBA Champion

Now a lot of things in life can be handed to you. Some individuals do not have to work as hard as you to get what you want, or where you want to be. This is for a number of reasons. But never underestimate the power of hard work and dedication. This story is a testament to that. When you give so much. And put in so much work. Believe you will be blessed in return. 12years spent. To get one championship. I bet this is a magnificent feeling. As Mr. KG once said “Anything is possible!!!

BeAwesome: #281 Forgive

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong- Mahatma Gandhi

I remember when I was 13. Me and my dad were visiting Blockbuster (Video Rental Store). I was excited. I was returning a game that I had rented 4 days ago. I was hoping to get another. Wrestling or Basketball was my preference. We went in the store and I picked a game promptly. As me and my dad arrived back to the car, I forgot to return the previous game in the slot. Dad requested that I take it and throw it in while he sat in the car. As I walked to the slot to drop the game in. I remember a comment. I’m older now. But I have yet to forget this day. And a name was called. In surprise. I look around. And disbelief it was called again. It was my first time being exposed to such ignorance but I was brought up in a different manner. I ran back to the car excited to play the game. I didn’t mention anything to my dad (Because he has a short fuse..ahah) But I remember now. And until today. I forgot. I forgot to tell her that I forgive her. I forgive her for such words. And I hope her ignorance is short.

To excuse for a fault or an offense. Pardon. To renounce anger or resentment against. Absolve from payment. To act accordingly. Refrain from imposing punishment on an offender or demanding satisfaction for an offense. It is not easy to forgive. Some of us simply do not know how. We don’t get it. Remember that we are all humans. Remind yourself how much forgiveness would mean if it were you on the other end. Just do it. Don’t force it. Take the time that is needed. And never act on your anger. Forgive can be made easy when you realize the issues that are presented and announced, are not about you, it is more about them. Think more of your self than revenge. Be responsible for your actions. FORGIVE

Those who are AWESOME Forgive. Everyone has their way of forgiving. Some do not forgive at all. We all have done things we regret or feel bad about. Mostly likely, one of those times you have been forgiven. Forgiveness is a gift. Appreciate it. Recognize it. Never take it for granted. And do it because you mean it. Never imply forgiveness for the sake of it. Forgive

The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire not things we fear- Brian Tracy

I was 10 years old at the time. I remember very vaguely. I remember sitting on the floor in my living room with my mom and dad. Possibly my sister. Witnessing a game I was still trying to figure out. Then it happened. It was 1998. Salt Lake City Utah. Scottie went down early. And the Utah fans felt a win on home court would send a game 7 to Chicago. An early lead for the Jazz sparked a fire. In his last NBA finals. This would be number 6. The jazz had no intentions on giving this one away. With the odds against the red and white. MJ started to rise to the occasion. The answer as history has recorded. 30 seconds left. MJ steals the ball. The clock goes down to 16 and  a championship ring is in the sights on the holder. Michael against Russell. 12 seconds left. 11. 10. Jordan. Jordan a drive. Hangs. Fires. Scores. The bulls lead 87-86. And MJ records his 6th ring in the last 8 years. With all the odds stacked against him. When you want something so bad. You only see the finish line. Everything else doesn’t matter until it’s over. If you don’t want it. You are better of giving up. You have to want it more then everyone else.

The centre of interest or activity. Adapt to the prevailing level of light and become able to see clearly. Concentrate at an extreme level. Block out distractions and outside influences. When you are focused on something. Nothing else matters. You have a goal. You see what it takes to get there. And you go get it. Some people think they understand (Me included) what focusing really is. When you see a vision. And you give 100% outside of the moment as you do inside the moment. That is focus. When you aren’t afraid to stand out. Sweat. Bust your butt. Feel confident that what you are doing is going to be great. Successful and make a difference. That is Focus. Understanding your ability. Never doubting the process. Or in-game experience. Always looking to improve and do what it takes to reach your full potential. Love to achieve. And learn from failure. Build. And Focus.

Those who are AWESOME focus. We see what we want. We take a picture. And see what it takes to get there. Our focus is stable. All outside influences stay still. We keep pushing. Our philosophy. To create. And control our emotions. In a way that influences our actions. To better our results.

We hear about this story all the time. One get’s cut from his high school basketball team. From Brooklyn New York, he was out to prove himself at a young age. With his close friend Harvest being the only sophomore to make the team that year. He was motivated. He was hungry to make his life what he wanted it to be. He feed from failure. He was pushed by the words and comments of others around him. The following summer he grew and found a spot on the varsity team averaging 20points per game in his final two season of his high school career. What happen next? Well if you haven’t figured it out already (I would be surprised if you didn’t). 5 NBA Most Valuable Player Awards. 6 NBA Championships. 10 NBA Scoring Titles. 10 All-NBA First Team. 14 NBA ALL Star Appearances. 2 Olympic Gold Medals. 6 NBA Final MVPS. And the list goes on and on and on. How did this happen? Did this individual just wake up and be given all of these things? Did he magically grow tall and be given the skill to compete at a high level. This individual produced. He produced at a level in which everyone should be trying to reach. Can we all be Michael Jordan ( Of course not) Can we try to work hard like him (Definitely)

Make or manufacture from components or raw materials. Grow. By Farming. By Grooming. Creating. Generating something. Present. Output a manner that is impossible to be broken. Get up and create something you believe in. When an individual is asked to create something out of nothing. They have 2 options. Try it. Or Quit. Individuals who try to figure out what works, what produce at a higher level. Individuals who quit. Will never find out. They will miss out on the experience and reason why things happen. Everything in life has a reason why (this is my own opinion) I think the worst things are used to create better things for the future. We cannot control bad things from happening. (This is life) But we can try to make these things never happen again. Produce a level of commitment to reach a goal or a passion you want to create. Produce a level of confidence that other people do not understand. Produce a way of life that is fitting for you and not the people on the outside of your life.

Those who are AWESOME produce. We grow from experiences and produce what we want our future to be. We are guided by our thoughts and motivations. Not by a book. Or another human being (Though we take advice often). We understand our life and where we are going. We create a plan and stick with it. We find a love or a passion and follow it.
