How to Survive the First Month of School

Is your first day of school coming up? Are you wondering what your new teacher is going to be like? What pair of nikes you are going to use to sway new friends? What parties and exams are you going to skip or make a priority? What sport teams are you going to watch or try out for? How close is the nearest grocery store, and can I make it in my slippers?

It is about that time of the year again, back to school! For me, that means new kids, new parents, and new desire to inspire young minds to believe in themselves and be nice to one another. The summer is gone, and it is back to the grind in the classroom for many of us around the world.

Let’s talk about September

What are the main concerns of an elementary student? 1. Is my teacher going to be nice 2. What do I have for recess? When I was little, every year I would wonder if my teacher was going to be nice, or if I had to watch out for the Big Bad Wolf, or did mom pack my Dunkaroos, or will I have to trade my sandwich with another classmate. As we get older, these thoughts continue to run through our heads, only in slightly different context. 1. Will I meet new friends or like my boss/or professor 2. I should have ate breakfast today/I need to pack a lunch.

September is crucial to your survival in your new setting. The first month will separate the men from the boys. The women from the girls. Your idea and perception of your new setting and experience will be fresh. Your ears will be alert and your mind and body will be focused on the task at hand. But for how long? Some of us will be entering a new school. Some of us will be going back to a similar setting after the summer holidays. Either way, September is the start of the “new” year. How do you have a great start?

The First Impression is Key

Don’t show up to school in hammy down’s aka hand me down’s. I am not saying go out and buy the most expensive pair of shoes or t-shirt, I am saying take care of your self and look presentable. Carol Goman writes, “that moment that stranger sees you, his or her brain makes thousands of computations: Are you someone to approach or to avoid? Are you friend or foe? Do you have status and authority? Are your trustworthy, competent, likeable, confident?

The decision of others and whether or not they will like or even deal with you are made quickly (7 seconds). Leave a great impression and you are well  on your way to an excellent week during the first month of school. Say hello to your collages. Shake the hand of your professor or teacher. Really mean what you say when talking to new people. Do the little things that count. Put in the work early and everything else is smooth sailing!

 Keep smiling

Being a teacher, I understand what it feels like to be exhausted from smiling and shaking hands with people you typically have nothing in common with or have know desire to be long-time friends with (sounds cruel but it is true). You can’t be best friends with everyone BUT you can be a great acquaintance. People can love to be around you even though they never see you.  Just keep smiling, just keep smiling, just keep smiling, smiling, smiling. Know one said you had to be everyone’s bestie on the first day. Smile, be polite and shake hands with everyone (use sanitizer often). This again, goes with your first impression. People will always remember your first encounter. This will set you up for easier interactions down the road.

Stay ahead of the Game

In my first year of university (for lack of better word) I sucked! I flat-out didn’t know what was doing, decided to watch sports instead of study, went for walks instead of reading and ate cereal to distract me from assignments. To often we allow ourselves to fall behind. We overlook what is ahead of us, and hope that it will magically complete itself the night before

Surviving September is about Staying a head of the Game. Sure, your friends will want to party. Your boyfriend will want to cuddle. Your friends will want to hangout and chat it up, talk about stuff you necessarily do not want to talk about anyway. Than don’t do it! When you are given an assignment, start it. You don’t have to finish it, but at least look and see what you have to do to complete it. A lesson plan, prepare for the week. Heck, prepare for the month if you have the time. A project to fulfill, do the research. Get the resources and be ready to produce some quality work.

Make a list of priorities and “at least”get started before the week that they are due. We all know what it feels like when Wednesday comes along, and you have a 4000 word essay due on Auscultation and Bromhidrosis by Thursday. Yeah, I don’t know what they mean either.

Don’t allow yourself to get in this position. Force yourself to make a list of up and coming due dates, and get started right away. The best feeling in the world is knowing that you are done something, when everyone else is scratching to make a deadline.

For me, I make a monthly schedule, of what I want to accomplish, by priority. I take 15-20 index cards, put a hole in each  one of them, and tie a string to hold them tight. I often check my dates and make sure I am on schedule. I see priority and needs and attack those ideas first. Life is a party, you will always have time for that. Friends will understand if they are true friends. Everyone else doesn’t matter.

September is the start of a new year. It is not quite, champagne and balloons yet, but it represents a new beginning. Every September students and professionals go back to the grind. Don’t be that person who, talks about doing things and never get’s it done. We all talk about this person and often fall in the same category at times. Put your words into action and do what it takes to be a head. What are you going to do to make this “new”year better than any other year?

As years go by, you will slowly understand the preparation, both mentally and physically to start fresh, and get off to a good start. The only people I know that can start poorly and still win are Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and Muhammad Ali. I guess and a few others. Once you get on their laugh, you’ll have nothing to worry about 😉

Start the grind early!

In the mean time, continue to #BeAwesome

We hear about this story all the time. One get’s cut from his high school basketball team. From Brooklyn New York, he was out to prove himself at a young age. With his close friend Harvest being the only sophomore to make the team that year. He was motivated. He was hungry to make his life what he wanted it to be. He feed from failure. He was pushed by the words and comments of others around him. The following summer he grew and found a spot on the varsity team averaging 20points per game in his final two season of his high school career. What happen next? Well if you haven’t figured it out already (I would be surprised if you didn’t). 5 NBA Most Valuable Player Awards. 6 NBA Championships. 10 NBA Scoring Titles. 10 All-NBA First Team. 14 NBA ALL Star Appearances. 2 Olympic Gold Medals. 6 NBA Final MVPS. And the list goes on and on and on. How did this happen? Did this individual just wake up and be given all of these things? Did he magically grow tall and be given the skill to compete at a high level. This individual produced. He produced at a level in which everyone should be trying to reach. Can we all be Michael Jordan ( Of course not) Can we try to work hard like him (Definitely)

Make or manufacture from components or raw materials. Grow. By Farming. By Grooming. Creating. Generating something. Present. Output a manner that is impossible to be broken. Get up and create something you believe in. When an individual is asked to create something out of nothing. They have 2 options. Try it. Or Quit. Individuals who try to figure out what works, what produce at a higher level. Individuals who quit. Will never find out. They will miss out on the experience and reason why things happen. Everything in life has a reason why (this is my own opinion) I think the worst things are used to create better things for the future. We cannot control bad things from happening. (This is life) But we can try to make these things never happen again. Produce a level of commitment to reach a goal or a passion you want to create. Produce a level of confidence that other people do not understand. Produce a way of life that is fitting for you and not the people on the outside of your life.

Those who are AWESOME produce. We grow from experiences and produce what we want our future to be. We are guided by our thoughts and motivations. Not by a book. Or another human being (Though we take advice often). We understand our life and where we are going. We create a plan and stick with it. We find a love or a passion and follow it.

ImInKuwait: Week 15 (Dubai)

ImInKuwait: Week 15 (Dubai)

What a week has been. Before you know it I will be off again to Berlin/Barcelona for the winter break. Will I miss home? Of course I will. I think about my family and friends every day. What are they doing. Do they think about me. How’s the weather. Did you tell a funny joke. I miss laughing with family. Eating grandma’s biscuits and treats. I miss family dinners and phone calls. I miss a lot things from home, but want to tell everyone that I am doing great, and enjoying this experience so far.

This week has been a bit of a blurr. School has been great. The students are starting to work independently. They continue to improve and work harder at each task they are given. Thursday  I was off to Dubai for the weekend. For starters, it was interesting to tell friends and family that I was going to Dubai for 2 days. The concept is different. I’m going to Dubai for the weekend. Like when do you ever say that? While I was gone, Kim Kardashian was at the Avenues Mall in Kuwait. She was promoting her new line “Millions of Milkshakes”. Wearing a Stephane Rolland white dress, Kim thanked everyone and welcomed her new brand to the Avenues Mall. She also mentioned that she “hopes” to return.

While Kim was in Kuwait, I was in Dubai watching Rugby with some great friends. It seems as though we are becoming closer and closer every day. It is great. Having new friends, who you feel comfortable with, and being so far away from home is important. These individuals have been helping me a lot 🙂 If you read this (THANK YOU). The plane was fantastic. It took roughly an hour from Kuwait to Dubai. It was clear a lot of people from Kuwait were excited to pick up a few beverages before touchdown in the all so famous Dubai City.

I was never really into Rugby until about 3 years ago. Attending StfX (Antigonish, Nova Scotia)and seeing the quality of Rugby played by the finest athletes in the country helped. The Stfx Women’s Rugby team was (still is) top of the line. It was a great way to get to know the sport. It was fast. Intense. And full of contact. When arriving to the Rugby Sevens, I was excited to watch some of the worlds best athletes take the field. The fans were packed. (Even though it rained off and on) At one point it rained so hard that everyone moved from the opening seats and tried to go under the tarp area. When that was unsuccessful, fans finally started to impress the rain and the event. One of the highlights from this event had to be the playing of Raining Men on the loud-speaker, and EVERYONE going absolutely crazy in the fans (In the rain) dancing and swinging arms in arms. Totally embracing the experience and enjoy themselves. It was an AWESOME feeling:-)

During the first day, I ran into a Nova Scotian. Crazy thing is, she happen to be from Cole Harbour (Which is literally 5 minutes away from where I live. I also saw from a distance a familiar face on the Canadian Women’s Sevens Team. It was strange at first, but as I looked closer, I was happy to see someone I knew from school playing !! 🙂 I quickly got up and tried to get a closer look, and it was her! I did not want to distract her, but I did see hello, as she warmed up for her game. The look on her face was confusion at Of course. But later, happy to see someone she knew.

On Day two, it was absolutely beautiful outside. The stands were packed by 10:30 and everyone was out to enjoy a day of rugby. I was able to watch semi final games in both Men’s and Women’s (Congrats Canada). The South Africa team was very impressive on the Women’s side. Along with the New Zealand All Blacks (Women’s). As time approached for us to leave and head back to the airport, I noticed how much time flies when you are having fun. I really started to think…

Never take a moment. An experience. A friend. A drink. A word. Anything you care about for granted. When it is over. It is over. You will only have the experience and thought. The memory to go to. You will go through a variety of experiences in life that others will dream to go through. Some will only wish and never get the opportunity. I say go for it. Do something different. Challenge yourself. Get outside your comfort zone and experience a new world. This trip has told me a lot about myself and what I look to do in the future. I hope to return to Dubai in the near future.

BeAwesome: #265 Integrate

Integrate what you believe in every single area of your life. Take your heart to work and ask the most and best of everybody else, too.- Meryl Streep

Integration is (2012) something (I feel) our world is working on. I see it every day. In the lifestyle that I live. In the workplace. Throughout friends and family. Integration is something we struggle with. Sometimes we forget what the word actually even means. I have this habit of integrating things. I love little treats. I’m not a big fan of chocolate or cake so I integrate candy and mix. The mix being nuts. Pumpkin seeds.etc. I freely buy different types and mix them together. If I really want to get fancy I put marshmallows in as well. Mixing the variety of treats creates trail mix. If you can be more like trail mix and less like a box of raisins life will open up for you.

Combine. Another with another so that they become one. Whole. Bringing into equal playground. Equal consideration. Unite all flavours and taste. Integrate ones feelings. Bringing together. The things we fear most in life involve integration. Two thoughts. Two opinions. Two ways to fix something. An important part of life is integrating life’s different elements together. When you put together parts of your life and integrate them as one, everything becomes a lot simpler.

Those who are AWESOME integrate. We take all of our lives responsibilities. All of our lives experiences and work and integrate these ideas in to one life that is happy and fulfilling for you. Without integration you find your self running around doing a variety of things. Trying to manage too much. Integrate to make things easier for yourself. Integrate to make stress an after thought. Integrate

BeAwesome: #262 Record

You ask me if I keep a notebook to record my great ideas. I’ve only ever had one- Albert Einstein

When I was about 10-12 years old I would record music from the tv. I loved watching the latest videos and listening to new music every day. I had no way of recording it. I went out and bought the 1990 TalkBoy from HomeAlone. Let’s just say it was something I would never forget. It had all of these fancy buttons and gadgets. I saved all of my money just to get this recorder. The device was a cassette recorder with a great grip. It consist of a stop, fast forward, rewind, pause, and record button. You could also slow/speed up the sound of your voice or what ever it is you were recording.

What I liked most about the Talkboy was its easy handle and accurate recording. I would record everything. Music. Tv shows. Even family conversations. I really felt like HomeAlone. Today, I realize and understand the meaning behind my excitement and recording. Why did I want to hear/listen to something over and over again. Why did I want to keep track of an experience/experiences I was going through.

Recording is about taking evidence. Keeping something for future reference. Register. Write down. Take note. Enroll. To record means “to want” to remember. And in life, to be successful we must record. We go through so many ups and downs throughout life that we often forget what has got us here in the first place. We forget the things that we’ve done, the  people who have helped us. Record theses memories and experiences. Allow your self to be thankful for each recording.

Those who are AWESOME record. We understand the art of memory. And how it is important. How it can slightly be changed insistently. We try to register meaningful information that keeps us happy. Record ones thoughts. Record ones ideas. Record

BeAwesome: #254 Generate

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come- Dalai Lama

Things don’t just happen. All of a sudden magic is not created. Of course miracles happen every day. And I am so thankful for these happenings. But. Things usually do not just happen. You do not wake up successful. You do not wake up with your dream job or occupation by chance. Opportunity knocks. But sometimes we are too late reaching the door. Sometimes we are too tired to reach the star. To set oneself up for a greater future. One must generate a specific way of life and mindset. We must generate a cause and its meaning. We must generate a power to influence ourselves to keep going no matter the circumstance or downfall. We must be emotionally invested in our thoughts and actions towards our goals and accomplishments. We must create. Produce. Be about something. We must become critical thinkers. Those who are AWESOME generate. Generate and define a purpose in which you have for life. Generate the reason why you want to do this. Generate a confidence level that is unbreakable. Generate a focus. Generate

Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential-Bruce Lee

To be sincere means: genuine, real, pure, unadulterated, honest, true, serious, earnest, unmixed, heart, love. To be sincere means a lot of different feelings and emotions. To be sincere about something means you believe. You believe in what you are doing and why you do it. You have trust and faith in your ability. A lot of people wake up and do things throughout life they hate to do. Why? A lot of people work hard but are afraid to work harder. Why? To do something with sincerity means you are deciding to give 110% into what you love to do. Your actions are used with purpose. Your movements are decided through reason. We work towards a sincere work ethic and way of life towards something you love and feel comfortable doing every day. Being sincere means you are living through what you love to do. You are the work and light behind your passion. Those who are awesome are sincere. They take great pride in what they love to do. They are gentle. They love and feel passionate and excited about growing every day. being sincere is second nature. We are sincere. Be sincere in what you do.Sincere
